Priority Flow Control: Build Reliable Layer 2 Infrastructure

ثبت نشده
چکیده

This document describes priority flow control (PFC), one of the functions of IEEE 802.1 Data Center Bridging, introduced to address reliability at Layer 2 on the Ethernet medium. PFC enables lossless semantics for a subset of the Layer 2 flows carried on an Ethernet segment. The subset of flows subject to the lossless semantics is identified by the IEEE 802.1p class of service (CoS) information found in the IEEE 802.1Q tags. PFC is currently being defined in the IEEE 802.1Qbb workgroup. Although the Cisco ® proposal for PFC has not achieved standards status yet, a significant number of vendors have embraced the frame format proposed by Cisco, and therefore PFC implementations can be deployed today without risk of future incompatibility in that respect. PFC is an important requirement for enabling Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) for storage consolidation, and this document describes how the Cisco Nexus TM 5000 Series Switches use PFC to build a lossless Layer 2 medium for FCoE.

Controlling Inbound Traffic

This work considers the problem of prioritizing the inbound TCP traffic of an organization network. The objective is to allocate dynamically a specific share of the incoming link bandwidth to a high priority inbound TCP traffic. However, if the high priority TCP traffic does not fully use its dedicated share, the low priority TCP traffic may take advantage of the unused bandwidth. Up to today, ...

QoS Requirements for the Smart Grid Communications System

A communications infrastructure is necessary in order to integrate numerous devices on the smart grid. Among the key technology areas, the implementation of integrated communications infrastructure needs to be performed with the highest priority to build the smart grid efficiently. To encounter possible disruptions of the grid system, a highly reliable, scalable, secure, robust and cost-effecti...

A New Framework for Increasing the Sustainability of Infrastructure Measurement of Smart Grid

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is one of the most significant applications of the Smart Grid. It is used to measure, collect, and analyze data on power consumption.  In the AMI network, the smart meters traffics are aggregated in the intermediate aggregators and forwarded to the Meter Data Management System (MDMS). The infrastructure used in this network should be reliable, real-time an...

Designing Network Infrastructure for an E-learning Cloud

This paper discusses the aspect of designing network infrastructure for e-learning private clouds. The aim is to build a comprehensive, stable, scalable, reliable and flexible infrastructure that will effectively support all models of deploying cloud computing services in academic environment. Main component of the infrastructure is a network organized in three logical layers: core, distributio...

Prioritized Information Recovery for Wireless Link-Layer Communication

In this paper we develop Prioritized Automatic Code Embedding (PACE) link-layer protocol to achieve preferred data recovery order across connections, while maintaining stable and reliable data flows over wireless networks. We classify link-layer traffic arrivals into different priorities based on the packet delay constraint and the distortion associated with the loss of that packet. The traffic...
